On the night of Tuesday March 18, Israel began an escalation of the genocide in Gaza with a resumption of carpet bombing that killed hundreds of people in a matter of hours, many of whom were children, and injuring many hundreds more. The attacks are ongoing, and at the time of writing, over 700 have been killed, bringing the total number of people killed to over 50 000 since October 2023.
Since the beginning of March, Israel has cut off all food, water, electricity and fuel, using starvation as a weapon against 2 million Gaza inhabitants. Israel has also ordered the forced displacement of the population from several areas, and made clear it has no intention of ending this brutality.
In the illegally occupied West Bank, Israel continues its destruction and terrorisation of refugee camps and communities, as well as its colonial annexation and apartheid.
All of this happened just days after the EU – despite ICJ’s provisional measures, and the ICC arrest warrants – welcomed Israeli officials in Brussels for a `business as usual’ meeting as part of the EU-Israel Association Council.
The European Union is Israel’s top trading partner, through an association agreement that gives preferential tariffs and privileged access to European Union resources. We call for this association agreement to be suspended until Israel respects international law and human rights. All the institutions of the European Union and all the Member States must assume their responsibilities and initiate the necessary procedures to ensure that this suspension takes effect as quickly as possible. In addition, all European countries have to fulfil their legal obligations as indicated in the ICJ Advisory Opinion, confirmed in the UN GA resolution of September 18th, as well as in the ICJ provisional measures against the plausible genocide.
Israel’s violence cannot happen without the ongoing economic, military and diplomatic support of the EU and its member states. It is far beyond time to end Israel’s impunity and European complicity.
This is the demand that will drive our coordinated actions in Europe from April 3-14.
